Posted Date: 04/20/2017
Arkansas City High School artists recently received eight Congressional Art Awards.
Sidney Nitler won first place with her piece “Flower Child”. Nitler received a scholarship, will get to travel to Washington D.C. and will have her drawing displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Josie Krout’s piece “Grandma’s Hands” tied for second place with Sarah Kuffler’s “Catfish”. Both girls are ACHS students.
Alexis Van Dyke, recent Scholastic Art Awards Silver Medal winner, took third place with her drawing “Bethany”.
The following ACHS students received Honorable Mentions: Josie Krout, Francisca Posadas (received two), and Sarah Kuffler.
“We are incredibly proud of these students and our art department,” USD 470 Superintendent Dr. Ron Ballard said. “This level of achievement comes from a mix of exceptional raw talent and teachers who encourage and guide student growth.”
The students were recognized at a reception earlier this month and their artwork is on display at City Arts in Wichita through April 22. The students are in Mr. Elliott’s class at ACHS. View a slideshow of the winners and their artwork below.
