About Us

Arkansas City Public Schools - USD 470 maintains a tradition of excellence in all matters related to student achievement and true, well-rounded education. Our students continuously meet and exceed state learning targets and go on to lead successful, fulfilling lives.

  • The Ark City community has a great deal of pride in the USD 470 staff and students. Athletic events and performances are well attended and businesses are quick to provide volunteers and support for in-class learning opportunities and special events.

  • USD 470 has a diverse population of students and works to include all. The district has made great strides toward reaching families of students who are learning English as a second language. The physical, mental, and emotional wellness of every student is a top priority at school.

  • Ark City schools offer a safe learning environment. All schools have automatic door locks, security cameras, and safety systems in place to protect students, staff, and community members.

  • Each of the six elementary schools offers a FEMA-rated storm shelter and every effort is made to make those available to the community at large when the need arises.

  • USD 470 offers a free, blended early childhood program for three and four-year-olds and the staff members collaborate with each other and with families to ensure a smooth and successful transition into Kindergarten.

  • The district has multiple exemplary arts and music programs at every level. Ark City art students are known for their success at local, state, and national competitions. Ark City music students are highly rated at the competitive level and have garnered much support from community members. The district’s performing arts programs have benefited greatly from external foundations and donors who support continued excellence in these areas. Next year, the high school band is traveling to Savannah, Georgia for learning and performance opportunities.

  • As a service to the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price meals, the district has waived textbook fees and multiple class fees for over ten years. The district also operates a 1:1 model so that every student has access to quality technology.

  • Ark City schools have a long tradition of offering advanced learning opportunities for students in career-technical education programs and a strong partnership with Cowley College that allows for high school students to attend some college classes for free.

  • The district also has strong partnerships with various community partners, including the City of Arkansas City, first responder agencies, public library, recreation center, health department, chamber of commerce, and many more.

  • As part of a well-rounded education, Ark City offers students a large variety of learning opportunities as well as access to various athletics and activity groups such as FFA, SADD, KAY Club, National Honor Society, JAG, and more. Students have every opportunity to become involved, complete service projects, and compete in various competitions - setting them up for lifelong success.

  • Recently, USD 470 upgraded all reading curriculum and support materials, grades pre-K thru 8.

  • USD 470 has maintained a stable taxation mill rate for six years.

  • The board of education has established a five-year capital outlay plan that assures the upkeep, improvement, maintenance, and modernization of our facilities.

  • The district has outstanding athletic and recreational facilities for school and community use.
