At its regular meeting Monday, the USD 470 Board of Education authorized the district to begin offering non-invasive BiNax Now COVID-19 testing in school buildings.
These non-invasive tests are most accurate on days two through five of symptoms and will allow trained personnel to test symptomatic individuals at school - hopefully catching it early and lessening the risk of spread.
“These tests are not invasive or uncomfortable which makes them a great fit for kids,” said USD 470 Nurse Jacque Arnett. “It’s a quick and painless swab right inside the nostril — it might feel similar to a tickle.”
The testing is not mandatory but rather a free, quick, and convenient opportunity to have a test performed. Arnett said the district will be providing more information, including a consent form, to parents in the coming days.
“In addition to the consent form, we will always try to make contact with a child’s parent prior to performing a test,” Arnett said.
USD 470 Director of Business and Operations Will Pfannenstiel said he hopes the district can begin testing within the next couple of weeks.
“We’re excited for this opportunity to help reduce the risk of COVID-spread in our buildings while also providing a service to our staff, students and their families,” said Pfannenstiel.
